Before Arriving

A valid passport (valid till your return to the home country )is required to submit an application for your student visa. You are required to obtain a STUDENT VISA before departing the home country. You need to work directly with the Indian Consulate to obtain your visa. As obtaining a VISA is not a right, but a privilege, make sure that you leave ample time to apply and have your visa processed. Application processing can take several weeks. For students on a short term study program, validity of the student visa can range from six months to one year. Always ask for a one year visa. Please remember that the expiry date of the visa is calculated from the date of its issue and not from the date of your travel.

Insurance
Purchase traveller's insurance through any study abroad Insurance agencies, which cover travel, medical needs, baggage, and travel accident protection in addition to emergency assistance services. Also buy health insurance covering you for the entire period abroad, preferably from your own home country. They are available in India also.
Medical Requirements
It is recommended that you have a complete physical checkup with your physician and a dental consultation with dentist before you leave your home country. For understanding regional health issues, visit www.cdc.gov/travel/indianrg.htm OR www.mdtravelhealth.com/destinations/asia/india.html which give basic details on regional illnesses and standard immunizations prior to travel.
The standard immunizations for India includes Hepatitis A,Typhoid,Tetanus,Diphtheria, Measles-mumps-rubella, and Varicella. Remember that you need to take these at least 4-8 weeks prior to departure for the shots to be effective.
Make sure that you carry sufficient amounts of updated prescribed medicines before you leave your country and be sure to keep the medicines in their original containers. Keep copies of all relevant medical records and prescriptions as they may be required during the Customs arrival check.
Customs Regulations
Indian Customs require you to declare goods in excess of free allowance, prohibited or restricted goods including narcotics, drugs, wildlife and its products, arms and explosives, commercial goods, at the Red Channel Counter. Attempt to import these goods and/or non-declaration can lead to penal consequences, including arrest.
Used personal affects including laptop, palmtop computer and reasonable jewellery can be brought in if you agree to re-export them during departure. Satellite phone, foreign currency notes in excess of US $5000 or equivalent and foreign exchange in excess of US $10,000 or equivalent are to be declared.
What to pack
Since garments can be bought cheap (one set of dress will cost approximately $20-30) in India, it is recommended that you travel light. For the Kannur weather, cotton garments that fit loosely are ideal. Shirts, T- shirts, tops and jeans /trousers or long skirts would be climatically and culturally suitable.
  • Electrical gadgets need to get connected to a 230V socket, you may need an adapter which would be locally available (cost $ 1).
  • Your Cell phone should be one which accepts international SIM card.
  • Remember to carry a sunscreen lotion, bug repellant, hand sanitizer etc.
  • Medications (both prescription and over the counter).
